Undergraduate and Graduate Students
We are always interested in having students work with us; there are possibilities for short-term positions (e.g., summer internships for undergraduate or graduate students) as well as longer-term ones (e.g., PhD projects for graduate students). Argonne’s close relationship to The University of Chicago, as well as a daily shuttle service between the two campuses, makes the opportunity particularly attractive for UChicago students.
The Department of Energy also sponsors a number of opportunities for students interested in collaborating with CPAC scientists including the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) and the Science Graduate Student Research program (SGSR). Application deadlines for these programs occur biannually in the spring and fall.
Postdoctoral Positions
CPAC has a strong postdoctoral program and we often have shared positions with other research groups. If you are interested in applying to us, please follow the instructions below. Applicants may consider applying for Mayer Fellowships or Massey Fellowships.
Applications are invited for post-doctoral positions in the Cosmological Physics and Advanced Computing Group (CPAC) Group in Argonne National Laboratory’s High Energy Physics (HEP) Division. Cosmological research within CPAC covers theory, modeling, and observations targeted at dark energy, dark matter, primordial fluctuations, inflation, and neutrinos. Theory and modeling activities emphasize multi-wavelength survey science, the galaxy-halo connection, cluster cosmology, and large-scale cosmological simulations. Analysis efforts cover topics such as CMB power spectra, CMB lensing, galaxy clustering, redshift-space distortions, and weak and strong gravitational lensing. The observational focus is on optical sky surveys (DES, DESI, Roman, Rubin Obs/LSST, SPHEREx), CMB instrumentation and observations (CMB-S4, SPT), and cross-correlations between the two. The cosmology effort at Argonne includes staff members from the CPAC group (Matthew Becker, Amy Bender, Lindsey Bleem, Katie Harrington, Andrew Hearin, Katrin Heitmann, Eve Kovacs), the Computational Science division (Michael Buehlmann, JD Emberson, Nicholas Frontiere, Salman Habib, Patricia Larsen, Adrian Pope, Nesar Ramachandra, Esteban Rangel, Azton Wells) and the HEP Detector Group (Clarence Chang, Gensheng Wang). Current CPAC postdocs are Gillian Beltz-Mohrmann, Biswajit Biswas, Giulia Campitiello, Will Hicks, Florian Keruzore, Wei Quan, Alan Perl, Patrick Wells, and Georgios Zacharegkas; the group also includes a number of graduate and undergraduate students. Postdocs can benefit from strong collaborations with applied mathematicians, computer scientists, device physicists, materials scientists, and statisticians; they will also have access to state-of-the-art microfabrication facilities and world-leading supercomputing resources. Interactions with research groups at Fermilab, the University of Chicago, and Northwestern University are highly encouraged.
Applicants should apply at Application Link by December 15, 2024.
Non-email correspondence should be sent to Katrin Heitmann, HEP Division, Argonne National Laboratory, 9700 South Cass Avenue, Bldg. 360, Argonne, IL 60439, USA.
